Aurora, Colorado Interim Police Chief Vanessa Wilson announced that three police officers have been fired for their roles in a photo mocking the 2019 chokehold and death of resident Elijah McClain. One of the officers made the initial stop on McClain. CBS News carried the live announcement:
The interim chief says the photos were taken on October 20, 2019 at the site of a memorial for McClain. The 23-year-old was stopped by officers while walking home from a convenience store months before. He was not armed and did not stop when officers told him to. The officers used a chokehold on him and paramedics injected him with a sedative. McClain died several days after the encounter.
Wilson says she was made aware of the photos that show officers smiling and re-enacting the chokehold used on McClain on June 25th, 2020 after an uninvolved officer saw the photo and reported it to a supervisor. The involved officers were immediately placed on Administrative Leave and an Internal Affairs Investigation began.
