It’s not exactly the feel-good news we’ve been waiting for, but there’s something deeply fabulous about a television reboot featuring fashion-forward horror icon Pinhead and his sadomasochistic band of soul harvesters the Cenobites. A nostalgia for horror you can see? Horror that has a purpose and a plan? Let’s not overthink it, let’s just rejoice in Deadline‘s announcement today that HBO has made a deal to develop a series from the classic horror franchise Hellraiser.
The idea is to create an elevated continuation and expansion of the well-established Hellraiser mythology. It is by no means a remake, but rather assumes the past mythology to be a given. The centerpiece remains Pinhead, the pin cushion-headed merciless leader of the Cenobites, the formerly humans-turned-demons that live in an extra-dimensional realm and are activated through a puzzle box called the Lament Configuration. The Cenobites come from hell to harvest human souls and keep balance between good and evil.
As a strangely pale and leather-clad HBO executive said today: “Come. We have such sights to show you. Pain and pleasure, indivisible.”
He then added: “We’ll tear your should apart…” – before disappearing into a shadow.
So far, there have been 10 Hellraiser films over the last 35 years, originally hatched from Clive Barker’s novella The Hellhound Heart.
And if this isn’t enough great news, there’s a separate Hellraiser film project in development at Spyglass Entertainment that is unrelated to the series. So much Pinhead! Yay!
