It gives us no pleasure that Disney has completely co-opted the once-charming Winnie the Pooh character created by AA Milne in honor of his son Christopher Robin. Even in England, where Milne’s children’s books originated, Disney’s oafish teddy seems to be the default version. Jane Brown, British eightysomething photographer who’s had the queen, Mick Jagger, Muhammed Ali, and Samuel Becket sit for her, was recently given “exclusive access” to Pooh at Hundred Acre Wood in Sussex, on the occasion of the bear’s 80th birthday. Is this the photo she got? “It was a happy experience and I was totally enchanted by him,” she said. Well, she’s eightysomething and enchanted to be alive, we expect.
