Sad story to report but it seems all that remains of works by Monet, Matisse, Picasso, Gauguin, Lucian Freud, and Meyer de Hanan may have been burned. Last fall, thieves stole seven works belonging to collector Willem Cordia from Rotterdam’s Kunsthal museum. Investigators traced the paintings to a remote Romanian village, where Olga Dogaru — the mother of the alleged thief — says she burned the works because she thought if they no longer existed her son couldn’t get into trouble. “I placed the suitcase containing the paintings in the stove. I put in some logs, slippers and rubber shoes and waited until they had completely burned,” said Dogaru, who admitted to torching the artwork to “destroy evidence” after her son’s arrest. #$%@! idiot! (The paintings include, Monet’s 1901 Waterloo Bridge, bottom, London, Gauguin’s 1898 Girl in Front of Open Window, right, and Picasso’s 1971 Harlequin Head, left) Experts haven’t yet confirmed the remains are those specific works, but they have discovered tin-lead yellow remnants, which has not been used since the 19th century, as well as nails and tacks made by blacksmiths. I don’t know what to say. This just bums me out. (via BBC News)
