ALBUMS / EPs
Our Thickness – THE RUSSIAN FUTURISTS (Insound)
The First Lady – FAITH EVANS (Capitol)
The Bravery – THE BRAVERY (Island Def Jam)
SUPERSTARS #1 HITS REMIXED – Various Artists (Sony/BMG)
Be – COMMON (Geffen)
Canadian one-man band Matthew Adam Hart delivers a groovy, psychedelic folk-hop pastiche like an underground Brian Wilson or Donald Fagen with beats; Irresistible Faith’s still standing with a selection of moody yet soulful gems; it’s not an honest mistake that this NYC band avoids retread with some damn hooky tunes; a sparkling disco ball album cover says it all with pop’s top-shelf divas remixed for late nights and illicit activity; don’t cross this prophet MC who ‘rhymes with the passion of the christ’ and a helping production hand from Bro. Kanye West.
“Dear Diary” – MICHAEL M (Amplitude Recordings)
“What Happens Tomorrow (Peter Rauhofer Mix)” – DURAN DURAN (Duran Duran New Partnership)
“Blue Orchid” – THE WHITE STRIPES (V2)
Hell is definitely for children as Ms. Lewis recruits spandex-tight backup to unleash her inner Iggy Benatar; Costa powers through an alphabet of lovers in this crunchy ’70s-soaked, rock/funk workout with confidence, range, and stamina; Miami club denizen breaks down those early-AM electro-tribal beats for you: day after day after day after. . .; you’ve got to believe (in something): Rauhofer refashions the Duran crew for a mid-’90s Sound Factory dancefloor; Meg pumps up the minimal lo-fi jam while Jack axe-grinds and reaches for that falsetto.
Most Honorable Mention: GANG OF 4
To Hell With Poverty 2005 (V2) / Entertainment (reissue) (Rhino)
No sign of any damaged goods here as the 4 old blokes can still mow down any of these kids with their self-described brand of “white sexless funk.” Reissue contains live gems like a cover of Velvet’s “Sweet Jane.” The recent, re-united live tour was truly awe-inspiring. A new album is in the works.
