You know Paul Rudnick from his work on movies like Addams Family Values, The First Wives Club, In & Out, and his play Big Night which deals with among other things, the aftermath a mass shooting.
His observations on Facebook have turned to politics while his Twitter (a must follow) has been an endless satire of Ivanka and Jared, the Pences and Melania. This is his latest on FLOTUS being booed in Baltimore.
“Melania was booed today by the students at an Opioid Awareness event in Baltimore. I had a strange kneejerk reaction, a sympathy for someone being heckled by a crowd, but then I thought about the situation. Her husband has called Baltimore
a rodent-infested mess’
‘the worst in the USA’
and a place ‘no human being would want to live.’
Many of the students were people of color, and Melania had vocally and aggressively supported Donald’s birtherism and other attacks on Barack Obama – there’s video of her doing this on The View.
My sympathy evaporated. Melania’s no innocent victim. She married Trump knowing who he is, and the most she’s done is parrot her ineffectual and often ludicrous Be Best campaign against bullying. She’s had every opportunity to present herself as independant and to contradict her husband’s bigotry and his assaults on women, both individually and in terms of defunding Planned Parenthood and vowing to end reproductive freedom.
She hasn’t said a word.
Is she required to? Some First Ladies have been circumspect, like Laura Bush, while others, like Hillary Clinton and Michelle Obama, have used their White House access to do real good. They’re both lawyers, but doesn’t Melania always brag about her mysterious educational background and her mastery of countless languages?
She got her greencard through a bizarre interpretation of a genius visa, and she got her parents citizenship through the same chain migration her husband savages. She’s an immigrant with zero empathy or concern for other immigrants trapped in far more desperate circumstances.
Maybe Melania never expected to become First Lady and some say she privately disagrees with her husband. All this is meaningless: she’s an adult American and she’s offered up nothing but approval, of all her husband’s hideous policies. She can and should be held accountable.
She could be following a great Republican role model in Betty Ford, who became a beloved crusader, using her own experience with alcoholism to fight shame and stigma. Betty Ford made a huge difference, to people of all parties. Does Melania even know who Betty Ford was?
When Melania’s attacked online for her nude modeling, it’s offensive, and calling her an escort only serves to insult sexworkers. Melania’s persona, her haughty, bogus glamour and Dynasty backstory, could all work in her favor, if she had any sense of humor or ability to talk to people. I could defend her privacy, but she’s also a citizen like the rest of us. When she says and does nothing, or toes the party line, she becomes fair game.
When those students booed Melania, they were most likely booing her husband and his vicious undermining of their country.
If she feels differently she’s got a bigger platform than anyone else on earth.”
I sort of felt bad about Melania being booed by students at an Opioid Awareness event, until I thought of her support for birtherism and questioned her Calamity-Jane-As-A-Pimp fashion choice; this outfit looks like she ordered it well done at a steak house #MelaniaBooed pic.twitter.com/NYnqdllBkr— Paul Rudnick (@PaulRudnickNY) November 26, 2019
One of those days when you fall out of bed, ask your assistant if "you know who" is still breathing, sigh, grab a coffee, throw on a robe and stumble out to greet the WH Christmas tree. Then yoga, sexting your chef, a glance at the schedule, roll your eyes and it's back to bed pic.twitter.com/HeoqDW4NRB— Paul Rudnick (@PaulRudnickNY) November 26, 2019
"It's a note from a soldier overseas, it says Dear Melania, please tell Karen to rethink teaching at a school that expels gay kids and to stop coloring her hair at home. Also, your own blonde highlights are very Knots Landing Farrah's Mom, and your husband's trans ban is obscene" pic.twitter.com/zDbXZ5zq7n— Paul Rudnick (@PaulRudnickNY) November 24, 2019
