You know Paul Rudnick from his work on movies like Addams Family Values, The First Wives Club, In & Out, and his play Big Night\. His observations on Facebook have turned to politics, while his hilarious Twitter feed is a must follow. This is his latest on Trump and how he’s NOT the president of the people.
“Every American President not only attempts to set policy, but needs to create and embody a national spirit. She or he must represent the entire country, and not merely whoever elected them. The President represents America, at home and to the world. Trump has never even attempted this. He favors only his rabidly white supremacist base and either ignores or attacks everyone else, using the most viciously infantile slurs.
Many Trump voters insist they’re not racist. This is easily disproved by asking them two questions: first,‘Do you think Obama became racially divisive, especially during his second term, when he discussed the murders of unarmed black teenagers?’
And second,
‘Do you think that minorities receive special treatment and favors?’
The Trumpites’ bigotry invariably pours forth.
Never attempt even the mildest conversation with a Trump supporter. If you present verifiable, nonpartisan facts, they will instantly respond with “fake news” or‘That’s not what I heard.’
If you ask for their version of an event, they go blank; all they’re looking for is libtard anger, their Viagra.
If you ask a Trump voter if she or he has ever met an immigrant, lost a job to an immigrant, or felt personally threatened by an immigrant, their eyes will narrow with suspicion. If you point out that Melania is an immigrant who hustled her family into the country via chain migration, they’ll change the subject.
Soon the Supreme Court will take up several cases regarding the legality of firing LGBTQ people, based solely on sexual preference or identity. Trump’s ban on trans soldiers is already in effect. Trump has packed his cabinet, the courts and of course, the Vice-Presidency, with people who fought against all gay civil rights, and in Pence’s case, have repeatedly sought to criminalize gay lives.
Richard Grenell, Trump’s odious, openly gay ambassador to Germany, insists that Pence is a ‘godly man’ who accepts gay people. Grenell has refused to comment on Pence’s support of conversion therapy or his wife Karen’s teaching at a school which expels LGBTQ kids. Grenell is Trump’s Roy Cohn, a weasel who has no problem betraying his own people and, much like Lindsey Graham and Aaron Schock, slobbering over whatever homophobe is in power.
So it’s not just that Trump is a bigot, a pathologicall liar, a criminal and a pig with a history of assaulting women. He’s always been these things; ask any New Yorker. I’m surprised that no journalist ever seems to have asked Trump why he’s so overwhelmingly despised by his own hometown.
The problem is that Trump is supposed to represent all of us, and he causes only revulsion in the majority of Americans. After the Mueller Report was released, which Trump claims exonerated him, his historically low poll numbers went further down.
Trump’s supporters invariably identify as Christian patriots, and Trump is neither. Trump is the opposite of America.” –Paul Rudnick
