Pete Buttigieg, the charismatic gay mayor of South Bend who has announced his 2020 presidential candidacy, appeared on The View today, and responded to Joy‘s question: “Do you think this country is ready for a gay president?”
“Well, there’s only one way to find out!” he responded to much applause.
“When I came out, it was 2015, and I was in the middle of a re-election campaign, and I was just ready. You know when you’re ready, and I wanted to have a personal life. And it was not obvious that was not going to be a safe thing to do. It was Indiana, Mike Pence was the governor at the time. And I wound up getting elected with 80% of the vote (*more applause*). I think people will evaluate for the job you’ve done.”
I’d kind of like him to get some experience on the national stage first, which he might get if he was paired with Biden or Harris.
No matter what, though, he’s got my vote. So yes: Run, Peter, run!
Is America ready for its first gay president?
