The 89th Academy Awards are right around the corner, and the leading buzz is whether La La Land or Moonlight will take the Oscar home for best picture. The LGBTQ academy members I’m sure are praying that the Academy does not repeat the Brokeback Mountain/ Crash scandal of 2006, to which Ang Lee‘s tragically beautiful gay cowboy drama lost to the subtle but not subtle racism mess that was Crash. To create some good juju for Sunday’s broadcast here is the list of all the actors who took home a gold statue for playing a LGBTQ character!
Nicole Kidman – The Hours
Charlize Theron – Monster
Hillary Swank – Boy’s Don’t Cry
Tom Hanks – Philadelphia
Sean Penn – Milk
Penelope Cruz – Vicky Cristina Barcelona
Phillip Seymour Hoffman – Capote
Natalie Portman – Black Swan
Jared Leto – Dallas Buyers Club
Christoper Plummer – The Beginners
While these are all well deserved wins, it comes with a bitter dichotomy. All these actors are cis-gendered heterosexuals, which is great, they all played beautiful characters and portrayed them well, but it’s sad that none of them were played by actual members of the LGBTQ community. As of 2016, only 10 OUT LGBTQ people have won oscars in a plethora of different categories. Though Hollywood can be portrayed as the artsy gay heaven of costume design and art direction, it’s quite a wake up call, when you realize that only a few members of the community have been recognized for their work.
PLEASE look back at this list, and recognize there is only ONE person of color represented. Moonlight is one of the first films nominated that focusses on queer pocs, and we hope that it receives the justified award it warrants.
