Judging by the torrent of negative press surrounding The Goop Lab, the new Netflix series inspired by Gwyneth Paltrow’s controversial lifestyle brand, you might think the actress-turned-health guru murdered a child or something. We caught an early look at the whole season and regret to inform all you hate-watchers out there that it’s not nearly as messy as reported – and one episode in particular is quite brave and groundbreaking.
In the third episode, titled “The Pleasure Is Ours,” Paltrow and chief content officer Elise Loehnen chat with feminist sex educators Betty Dodson and Carlin Ross about their workshops, which help women learn more about their anatomies in order to achieve more fulfilling orgasms. The women frankly discuss the cultural shame surrounding the female body, and more specifically, the sex organs. This leads to some rather surprising moments of genital show-and-tell, replete with closeups of various vulva that show that every body is different, and there’s simply nothing to be ashamed of.
We’ve already spoiled a lot, but let’s just say the episode “climaxes” with a truly revolutionary moment in television, and concludes one of the most sex-positive discussions seen thus far in mainstream entertainment. Say what you will about the other topics explored in the series (mediums, energy healing, cold therapy), “The Pleasure Is Ours” is the one that we can all learn a thing or two from.
The GOOP Lab with Gwyneth Paltrow is a six-episode series, guiding the deeply inquisitive viewer in an exploration of boundary-pushing wellness topics, including: psychedelics, cold therapy, female pleasure, anti-aging, energy healing and psychics.
The Goop Lab launches on Netflix January 24,
