YES! Hallelujah! Wigstock, the legendary outdoor drag festival, will be returning to New York for the first time in almost 20 years (2001, to be exact).
Lady Bunny, of course, is spearheading the revival alongside Neil Patrick Harris and husband David Burtka who, according to the New York Times, reached out to her and said they’d like to help get it up and running again. The three of them then brought in other partners, including the Oscar-winning producer Bruce Cohen (American Beauty, Milk), the production company Matador (Banksy Does New York), Gay Men’s Health Crisis and Pride Media, which publishes Out magazine and The Advocate.
Tentatively booked so far?
Alaska, Alex Newell, Amanda Lepore, Barbara Tucker, Basil, Bianca Del Rio, Bob the Drag Queen, Candis Cayne, Charlene Incarnate, Darnelle XV, Desmond Is Amazing, Dina Martina, Dita Von Teese, Heklina, Jackie Beat, Jada Valenciaga, Jinkx Monsoon, Joey Arias, Justin Vivian Bond, Kevin Aviance, Latrice Royale, Lina Bradford, Linda Simpson, Lypsinka, Murray Hill, Peaches Christ, Peppermint, Raven O, Sherry Vine, Taylor Mac, Varla Jean Merman and Willam.
And…. maybe…. possibly…. Neil Patrick Harris back up in drag again? Doing some Hedwig numbers? “Wig in a Box”?
It could happen…
Bunny has a few concerns, though.
via NYT:
For starters, she frets that millennials may not applaud with appropriate enthusiasm. “Will anybody put down their cellphones long enough?” she said. But she is pleased about the upgraded space.
“The venue is gorgeous,” she said. “We even have a toilet in the dressing room.”
Wigstock roars back to life Sept. 1 at Pier 17 in Lower Manhattan.
