As probably the creepiest Hanson fan on the planet, who listened to the entire Middle of Nowhere CD on repeat for all of 1997, I can say that watching the boys sing “MMMbop” again on Good Morning America is a slightly bittersweet experience. The boys – MY BOYS – are all men now. Handsome and capable musicians. Kind of creepy Republican/Evangelical types, if I remember correctly, but whatever. But the song holds up. It’s still sweet and impossibly catchy. It’s just… kind of sad. Our lost youth…. The ’90s, which I hated so much at the time, but now realize was one of the last great decades for music and fashion and celebrity and pop culture in general, is gone. So much has changed. I don’t know. I don’t know. I loathe nostalgia. There’s no point in wallowing in “MMMbop.” but here it is. Twenty years later. Watch it below. Or don’t. Move on.
You have so many relationships in this life
Only one or two will last
You go through all the pain and strife
Then you turn your back and they’re gone so fast
Oh yeah
And they’re gone so fast, yeah
Oh
So hold on the ones who really care
In the end they’ll be the only ones there
And when you get old and start losing your hair
Can you tell me who will still care
Can you tell me who will still care?
Oh care
Mmmbop, ba duba dop
Ba du bop, ba duba dop
Ba du bop, ba duba dop
Ba du, yeah
Mmmbop, ba duba dop
Ba du bop, ba du dop
Ba du bop, ba du dop
Ba du, yeah
