Breakout SNL star Leslie Jones is about to break out of 30 Rock Plaza and never look back. TMZ is reporting that she will NOT be returning for season 45 of Saturday Night Live... and it’s all her decision.
Fact is … Leslie’s got a lot more on her plate now, thanks in no small part to her time as one of the biggest stars on ‘SNL’ — where her personality, wit and skits made her a hot commodity in Hollywood.
Jones had been toiling away for years when she got her break on SNL, becoming the oldest cast member ever to join the cast. The show opened a lot of doors for her and, after five years on SNLand two Emmy nominations for her work on the show, Jones has decided to take advantage of those new opportunities.
Among them: The Coming to America sequel with Eddie Murphy…voicing a character in the upcoming Angry Birds 2movie.. I Am Maurice with Chris Rock as a Haitian immigrant moving to the US after the earthquake of 2010… oh, and she just signed with Netflix for a comedy special.
Sad to see her go, but onwards and upwards, I suppose.
Thankfully we still have Kate the Great. Kate McKinnon, whose contract was up in May, has decided to come back for what would be her eighth season on the show. Whew!
Other veteran SNL cast members who are returning next season include Kenan Thompson, Aidy Bryant and Cecily Strong. Again: Whew!
Season 45 of SNL premieres on September 28 with Woody Harrelson, in his fourth appearance as host, and musical guest Billie Eilish.
