The first time I saw this commercial for Kingsford charcoal, I started sobbing like a baby and couldn’t for the life of me figure out why. The second time I saw it, I realized: OMG, that slow, sad song is ACTUALLY ’80s party hit “Fascination” by the Human League! One of the most annoying/fabulous songs of all time! As a teenage Jimmy St. James, I used to drive my mother INSANE playing it over and over and over at TOP VOLUME (as you do). I think I might have even lost my virginity to this song. TMI, I know, but my affinity for this song runs VERY deep. Just hearing it immediately transports me back to those heady days of the early ’80s. Anyway, this new version is sung by Rob Crow of the band Pinback and it’s so haunting and so moving, even if you WEREN’T around back then and have NO IDEA what the song is, it will still leave you slightly shaken. Who knew a Kingsford Charcoal commercial could be so cathartic? (Especially when their RADIO commercials are some of the creepiest and most disturbing ever produced.)
