Obama gave a much anticipated speech to the HRC over the weekend. Many were hoping that this would be the long-awaited moment when the president would announce that he has finally “evolved” and now supports full marriage equality. But that didn’t happen, Obama didn’t even make an effort to recant his past bigoted pseudo-religious statements about God being “in the mix” and how that God of his apparently doesn’t want us nasty gays to soil the “sacred union” between a man and a woman. But he did take the time to hypocritically castigate the Republican candidates who stood silent during a recent debate when some audience members booed a gay soldier. So it’s bad to heckle a gay soldier, Mr President? But it’s OK for you to block gay soldiers who are the real victims of Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell from getting equal severance pay? And it’s OK for you to fight the court ruling that found DADT to be unconstitutional and work to have that order vacated so that some other president can come along and re-instate the discriminatory policy? Is it OK for you to continue to refuse to support the inclusion of non-discrimination protections that cover sexual orientation under military EO policy?
There is a reason the president’s approval numbers now regularly languish in the low 40s and have even begun tripping into the terrible no-man’s-land of the triple digits. Everybody knows that when you’re in “election mode” you give a good speech, Mr President. The problem is the public also knows that during an election you campaign like you are MLK, but when the election is over, you unfortunately govern like you are George W Bush.
