Sophia Coppola’s latest project The Beguiled has reportedly began production in Louisiana with Focus Features. Coppola’s signature brand of auteur, which includes writing the screenplay herself, is an adaptation of the novel under the same name by author Thomas Cullinan. Early rumors suggested Kirsten Dunst would be joining the project (their fourth collaboration!), and it was announced yesterday by We Are Movie Geeks that the gossip is indeed true. After an incredible year for Dunst on Fargo’s second season as Peggy Blumquist (which earned her a Critic’s Choice Award and an Emmy and Golden Globe nomination), she leads with an all star cast including Nicole Kidman, Colin Farrell, and Elle Fanning (their second collaboration).
Let’s look through their legendary cinematic partnership, shall we?
Coppola on Dunst: “Kirsten attracts light, you want to watch her.”
Dunst on Coppola: “She saw me as a woman before I did.”
That sixteen year old comment of course comes from Dunst playing the (iconic) dark rebel Lux Lisbon in the cult classic The Virgin Suicides.
Their second collaboration was the visual candy confection, Marie Antoinette (which Kiki totally should’ve been nominated for an Oscar, bbs):
Who could forget the audio masterpiece of this film?
Their third collaboration (which may come as a surprise for some) was The Bling Ring where Dunst makes a cameo:
Dunst will play Edwina Dabney and the synopsis is as follows: THE BEGUILED unfolds in a girls’ school in the state of Virginia in 1864. As the Civil War rages, The Miss Martha Farnsworth Seminary for Young Ladies has been sheltered from the outside world— until the day a wounded Union soldier is discovered nearby and taken in.
