As I’ve mentioned here before, I left New YorK City October 1 for a couple of weeks, the day street art phenom Banksy started his “residency program. According to the stealth artist’s website for the rest of the month “Banksy will host an entire show on the streets of New York called Better Out That In. His site also says also says, “To enhance your enjoyment of the exhibits an audio guide is provided via cell phone. 1-800-656-4271 #1. Simply call the number next to the painting and select the appropriate option on the keypad. This is a toll free service.” BTW, For the unacquainted, Banksy’s real name has never been confirmed, despite his pop culture status. He’s said that the illegal nature of graffiti demands secrecy and likened unmasking himself to leaving “a signed confession” for his art crimes. In the Beaver’s neighborhood, the East New York section of Brooklyn, local residents saw an opportunity to make some cash and starting charging to take a picture of his work which defeats the purpose of being “free” street art – still, you have to admire the initiative. What do YOU think of Banksy’s work? I like the idea (and certainly, his part in the documentary Exit Through the Gift Shop is GENUIS. See it if you haven’t…) but the work is spotty, to me. Brilliantly on target at times, Hallmark corny, at others. UPDATE PIC: Instagram of foiled “detectives” trying to trace his tire tracks… (Photos: Banksy)
