In the wise words of Hayley Kiyoko it’s #20gayteen and today is America’s birthday, so why not celebrate her by binging some TV with our favorite LGBTQ characters? Of course my favorite LGBTQ characters on TV are the queens on RuPaul’s Drag Race but there are some other people I love. Go binge and get your 4th of July celebration on!
Adena from The Bold Type on Freeform
How can you not love Adena? She is so unapologetic about who she is and I am always here for queer women of color, because we need more of their stories. Also she is this super creative individual who knows how to have important conversations (ie. Kat reciprocating oral sex).
Blanca from Pose on FX
She is the mother we all need, she plays no games. She is so focused on taking care of her children and I love it! The way she cares for them, pushing them to be their best selves is amazing! Blanca is determined and passionate. The way she fights for transgender rights endlessly is how so many people need to be in the fight for equal LGBTQ rights.
Connor from How To Get Away With Murder on ABC
I know, I know, Connor is a bit of an ass sometimes, but how much he loves Oliver is wonderful. He is rash and hot headed but also one of the most caring people. And it doesn’t hurt that Connor is HOT! If you think otherwise feel free to @ me and I will gladly prove you wrong.
Keelin from The Originals on The CW
If you couldn’t tell I am here for my queer women of color. I love Keelin because she is so empathetic, but also so SMART! She’s a doctor werewolf! Like c’mon! But also how she wants to help everyone — which is such a better mindset than her girlfriend, Freya, who only thinks about her family (even though her family is literally the cause of every problem). She’s also likeable, unlike every other supernatural character on the show (except Haley).
Jack McFarland from Will & Grace on NBC
Y’all, I mean “Just Jack” is by far the greatest show ever not made. Jack is so much like me it’s perfect. He is so EXTRA (as so many people in the office like to say about me) and loves himself so much and knows he’s by far the greatest, which I don’t see a lie in it. He is just so much like me that I have to love him.
Jamal from Empire on FOX
Have you heard that boy SANGGGGG?! Played by actor Jussie Smollett, he is actually that amazing of a singer. He is also the most pure of the Lyon boys. He has such good intentions (majority of the time) and even when his family is the actual worst he cares about them and sticks with them. Also he has such a forgiving heart because I don’t know if I could forgive Luscious for half the things he’s done.
Tastee from Orange Is The New Black on Netflix
Do I even have to explain why for Tastee? If she is not your favorite character on Orange Is The New Black I don’t think we are watching the same show. Tastee is good hearted and warm, but also a fighter. She is going to stick up for what and who she cares about. Tastee is the type of person we should all strive to be in some way or another (maybe not the convicted criminal way, but ya know what I mean).
Titus from Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt on Netflix
Titus is a queen! An overdramatic queen that has mastered the art of “woah, is me.” He can turn the smallest of things into the biggest of deals. He’s also so nurturing of Kimmy in his “Titus” way of course. Also he recreated Lemonade, so like YAS QUEEN! Titus is wonderful and I don’t think I have to explain that any further.
Alec from Shadowhunters on Freeform (*Previously)
Let me start by saying that I am PISSED they cancelled Shadowhunters. I loved Alec because he is this hardass that plays no game. He loved his sister and Jace so much, granted sometimes that led him to be in situations that weren’t so great, but he still loved them. Alec was great because his story really showed how some LGBTQ people struggle with figuring out who they are, but showed how happy they can be when they are their true selves.
