If this one-sentence description of the film doesn’t have you flopping on the floor and gasping for air, you are NO FRIEND OF MINE, sir.
Roger Michell’s new documentary, Tea with the Dames, follows Dame Maggie Smith as she spends a weekend in the countryside drinking, gossiping, and generally having a good time with her close friends and fellow British acting legends Dame Judi Dench, Dame Eileen Atkins, and Dame Joan Plowright.
Maggie Smith?! Judi Dench?! Eilen Atkins?! Joan Plowright?! TOGETHER? Dishing the dirt on their almost-100 years of breaking boundaries and generally just being iconic?
TAKE MY MONEY!
According to Town & Country, the film is…
….packed with quippy one-liners, and juicy insight into the four actresses’ ground-breaking careers on both the stage and screen.
In the teaser, Atkins gossips about the ’60s, while Plowright chats about working with her ex-husband Lawrence Olivier, only to have Smith say, “Well, we all found him tricky. I think I scared the wits out of him from time to time.”
Dench reveals she “was quite taken aback” when asked to play M in the Bond movies, and at one point, she even yells “F*ck off, Roger!” when the director tries to get the foursome to talk more about getting old.
Toward the end of the clip, Plowright asks, “Do you think we out to have a glass of Champagne round this one? Plowright asks. To which Smith retorts, “Why didn’t anybody think of that a few hours ago?”
Tea with the Dames opens in theaters on September 21 and will be on-demand on September 27.
