Another day another Queen cover. And I get that you always want to put your own spin on things – otherwise what’s the purpose – and that very few singers can pull off Freddie Mercury‘s theatrical bombast, so why try? But it’s taking me a moment to accept this. It’s very different. VERY different. It’s being described by music critics as “ghostly,” “moving,” “calming,” and “minimalist” And sure. Yeah. All of those. And Troye‘s voice is angelic, as always. I get it. I love him. So listen to it below. Then compare and contrast with the original. Then tell me what YOU think. I’m sure by the end of the day, it’s going to be my favorite song of all time. It’s just… taking a moment to grow on me.
In a statement, Sivan expressed his delight at being given the chance to perform and record his take on the 1976 track. “I’m beyond honoured to have been asked to cover ‘Somebody to Love’ by Queen, a masterful song by the most legendary band.”
Queen’s manager Jim Beach added: ‘’Troye’s version is a unique take on this Queen classic… It is both moving and totally original.”
Bohemian Rhapsody, of course, opens today.
