Oh, I hate to be that cynical guy, but after a quarter of a century of watching the MTV Movie Awards, I really do know the drill. It should be renamed the Marketing To Very (Young Adults) Awards. I know, the acronym doesn’t fit exacty, but you get my point. This awards show is a gigantic excuse to shamelessly market the SHIT out of upcoming films to the 18-30 movie crowd.
Most of this audience wasn’t even born when the first gold popcorn bucket was given out in ’92. (Actually, the first award was a film reel.) I hate to burst the bubble, kids, but all the winners KNOW they are going to win. (No? So, the audience just happened to be filled with light sabers after a certain movie won Movie of the Year…?) No surprise as to who is getting honored. Otherwise, you’re not going to get A-listers like Charlize Theron & Ryan Reynolds to show up. This year, it all took place outdoors on the Warner Bros. backlot, with Duane “The Rock” Johnson & Kevin Hart doing hosting duties.
It took Salt ‘N Pepa, Queen Latifah AND the Lonely Island guys to properly introduce Will Smith who picked up the Generation Award, with sons Trey & Jayden looking on. We got to see Will again with his co-stars, Cara Delevinge, Margot Robbie and Jared Leto in the newSuicide Squad trailer, but to me THE most exciting trailer of the night was, Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them, J.K. Rowling‘s Harry Potter prequel. Oscar-winner Eddie Redmayne, showed up to introduce it, so you KNOW this show is about star-power and big, big bucks. The aforementioned Movie of the Year, which was Star Wars: The Force Awakens, was brought to you by Cinnamon Toast Crunch. I think that pretty much says it all.
Melissa McCarthy deservedly won the Comedic Genius Award (the first female ever!?), Alexander Skarsgård came out with an embarrassed Samuel L. Jackson in a tux sans pants (he’s the new Tarzan, and want to keep it sexy but classy) and Seth Rogan got (fake) pumped up to try to compete with his Neighbors 2 co-star, the shredded Zac Efron.
There were fireworks and a flashy but underwhelming performance by Halsey who was showed up by a vintage inspired tiny diva, by the name of Grande. Ariana is this generation’s Mariah.
It was all in good fun and it got the kids cranked up to see the summer’s hottest movies. See all the winners below, plus a look back at 25 years of MTV Movie Awards. And you can check out the red carpet arrivals here.
