CP: What inspired you to do the show, Sell It Like Serhant?
Ryan Serhant: “It kind of came from a lot of different conversations, but I was really looking at what I ended up being most successful at, which wasn’t just selling real estate. I was looking at my team, young agents, and newer agents from all over the world who were very good at one thing or knew a lot about real estate, but were not very good at selling it. So, I was teaching my team how to sell it [on Million Dollar Listing New York] and was dealing with people reaching out to me everyday who watch the show and tell me that they learned how to sell something from watching my show. So, if I could do what I personally do for my team on MDL NY for people outside of real estate sales, then I could be helpful to people everywhere.
These places [that will be featured on the show] have nothing to do with real estate, so I’m going to be a fish out of the water in a way, which will be fun for me. Whatever the business is, I have to learn about their business and help them make the right investment choices. I’ll have to dig deep and get to the emotional core of why these people aren’t very good at selling to figure out how I can make these businesses and people succeed.”
CP: What can fans expect to see on the show?
RS: “It’s going to be insane. I think people are going to see me in a different light. I’m not going to be in a suit selling real estate in New York. I’ll be helping retail employees learning how to sell. It will definitely be funny, because I can’t do anything that’s not funny. People will be able to learn new thing about different types of jobs.
It’s not going to be purely entertainment, it’s very important for me that people will be able to watch every episode and take notes. They’ll be able to watch it for entertainment value while also watching it for educational purposes. Hopefully they will be able to learn and apply Sell it Like Serhant to their own life.”
CP: What would your say has been your biggest sales challenge?
RS: “Overcoming rejection.”
CP: What’s been the funniest sales moment of your career?
RS: “When my client, Patty, gave me a pig. Definitely the funniest, weirdest moment of my career ever.
CP: Do you still have the pig?
RS: “No. [laughs] She told me it was a teacup pig, but it was definitely a potbelly pig that’s over a hundred pounds and now lives in the Bronx.”
CP: What’s one piece of advice you’d like to give other salespeople?
RS: “To have endurance. Sales isn’t about selling that one thing- it’s about selling everything. If you have endurance like a long distance runner, it doesn’t matter if you don’t sell that one thing today. Sure, it will make you sad, it will bum you out. But if you can overcome the rejection and wake up tomorrow with your head up, shoulders back, thinking tomorrow will be more positive then you’ll be excited and you will sell something that day. Endurance is something that kills 99% of the sales people because some people can’t get through it.”
