Many of President Obama’s supporters have spent considerable amounts of time over the last two years lambasting anyone who dared to voice criticism about the Democrats failure to act on LGBT equality issues with the near constant refrain to be “patient.” Patience may indeed be a powerful virtue, but when it comes to passing pro-LGBT legislation; it’s nothing compared to having control over both houses of Congress. But like it or not the waiting game is now over. Democrats no longer control the House, and have seriously reduced their majority in the Senate. It would seem that patience is for pawns.
Despite the beat down the Democrats took yesterday there is some good news for the LGBT community to come out of the midterm elections. A record number of 123 openly gay candidates were on the ballot in elections throughout the country and a majority emerged victorious! And all openly gay incumbents were re-elected, including LGBT Representatives Barney Frank-MA, Tammy Baldwin-WI, Jared Polis-CO, and David Cicilline-RI.
