Here are partners Jenny Bailey and Jennifer Liddle. Bailey is the elected mayor of Cambridge, England, Liddle is the mayoress. They’re the world’s first sex-change mayor and mayoress. Both Bailey and Liddle are transgenders who share a house with the two children Bailey fathered before his reassignment operation. “So many more things define me than being transgender, a medical condition I had 15 years ago which I have now recovered from,” said Bailey. “I’m proud that I managed to get through something which was quite difficult and managed to come out of it a better person. I certainly do not want it to eclipse being mayor.” There are about 30,000 people in Britain with gender dysphoria, the condition of being conflicted about gender and sex. Although there are transgender mayors in other countries, there were none in the UK until now. “And for there to be a mayor and mayoress is unique,” said Janett Scott of the Beaumont Society, a support group for transgender people. “It is a very positive thing.” Now, if they would just lose the title “mayoress.” (Full story at Daily Mail; photo: MMP; t/y Eduardo)
