Barack Obama’s old friend and “spiritual counselor” Reverend Senator James Meeks, is an early prospective mayoral candidate in Chicago. Meeks was described by the Chicago Sun Times in 2004 as someone Barack Obama regularly sought spiritual counsel from. Rev. Meeks even appeared in a television ad supporting Obama’s 2003 senate run and since then served on Obama’s presidential exploratory committee and was listed on Obama’s senatorial campaign website as one of Obama’s “influential black supporters.” And like others who have held the title of Obama’s spiritual adviser, Meeks is virulently anti-gay.
According to a 2006 Chicago Sun Times article, his church sponsored a “Halloween fright night” which “consigned to the flames of hell two mincing young men wearing body glitter – who were supposed to be homosexuals.” The Advocate is now reporting that Meeks has stated that if he becomes mayor he would only address gay issues like Hate Crimes and Gay Marriage if he was bored and had nothing else to do. “Now if I were sitting around bored with nothing to do, that stuff might come up. But I expect to be so busy with schools, crime, and budget problems during my first term that I won’t have any time.” Meeks stated. Let’s hope the people of Chicago are better at picking a mayor than Barack Obama is at picking spiritual advisors.
