I find it unseemly for Madonna to repeatedly refer to herself as a “girl” in her songs, and to try and fool us into thinking she’s of childbearing years in her videos (BREASTFEEDING A DOLL IN “GIVE ME ALL YOUR LOVING”? GIVE ME A BREAK!). So I find this cool drink of water especially refreshing. “Free Falling,” was written by William Orbit and her brother-in-law Joe Henry (who wrote one of her last good songs “Don’t Tell Me”), and has a lovely, vaguely medieval feel to it. The voice is classic Madonna, reminding me of “Oh Father” and “Frozen.” If only the other crap was as good as this.
