We caught up with Jamal Sims and his soon-to-be hubby Octavius Terry backstage counting down to the unprecedented LIVE! hot matrimonial extravaganza slated to take place smack bang in the middle of tonight’s 56th Grammy Awards. With Macklemore and Madonna and who knows who else officiating, it’s bound to wake a few people up and open their eyes to the happy reality of marriage equality. Maybe Queen Latifah will come out, Sherri Shepherd see the error of her ways, and Duck Dynasty’s Phil Robertson find his inner drag queen.
FENTON: We’ve known each other forever, right?
JAMAL: I first was introduced to WOW when I was 21 yrs old. I was a new dancer in the industry and audition for a Vegas show to sing and dance for an anonymous artist that they wouldn’t reveal until we got the job. Only to find out once I was booked the gig it was the incredible RuPaul! Ru was managed by WOW! They took me in with open arms.
We thought you were gay because we think everyone is, but you weren’t out at the time…
It was not until recently did I realize it was ok to be gay and live a happy open life that way. I would say within the last 5 years. I guess with age you care less about what people think. I will say the first time I saw a real gay male relationship was Ru and his boyfriend George. That was my first example of what it could be. At that point, the road to get to where I am today began.
When did you decide to get married and why did you decide to do it on national TV?!
We decided we would get married over the holidays so we made it official and set it for 2014. A week later the casting agent called and asked if we would get married live in national television.
We agreed to do it on television because we, like so many young men, especially African-American men, didn’t have an image or an idea that we could visibly see to look up to. We felt it was important to give the younger generation another take on what a gay marriage looks like.
Are you nervous?
We are not nervous at all! Actually so excited. Octavius is a designer and he designed our tuxes for the night! I can’t wait for the world to see his designs as well!
Any plans for a honeymoon?
We leave next week to Miami for a couple days (our favorite spot) then to Brazil!!
And then back to werk, right?! We are so excited to be producing your documentary directorial debut…
It’s a documentary on an emerging dance sub-culture in the south called “Bucking”. The story is based on five gay dancers in the scene and we follow them on their journey to fight the stereotypes, misconceptions and pursue their happiness and passion for dance! It’s my passion project and I’m working with my right hand producing partner Jordan Finnegan. It’s going to be amazing!
Any final words?
Madonna came up to me and Octavius last night and said y’all are FUCKING CRAZY!
She should know! Thank you for your courage and everyone at WOW wishes you all the love, luck, and happiness in the world. Pass the Kleenex.
