The New York Times is reporting that Governor David Paterson said on Thursday that he expects to sign a same-sex marriage bill into law in the next coming weeks! Paterson expects the State Senate to give final legislative approval to the measure in the weeks ahead and he has pledged to sign it. If the measure passes it would make New York the seventh state to legalize same-sex marriage. Governor Paterson admitted he can’t force the Senate to take up the bill and he can’t guarantee approval, but he says he’s now confident it will pass.
The bill was blocked last summer by an attempted coup in the Senate during the final days of the regular session in June. The Democrat-led State Assembly has already approved the measure. (via Towleroad)
