During what was ostensibly a tribute to the late Aretha Franklin at last night’s VMAs, the world squeamishly watched as Madonna launched into a long, shaggy-dog story about… um…. auditioning for a dance company and singing an Aretha Franklin song but not getting the part and then later getting another job she didn’t want but ultimately she became a star anyway? I think? Twitter LIT UP as she droned ON and ON while a giant projection of Aretha loooooomed over her, as if to say “OMG, GET ON WITH THE STORY, ALREADY.” Really. Leave it to Madonna to make Aretha’s death ALL ABOUT HER.
I’d love to hear Madonna’s poignant reflections on the Holocaust and how it eventually helped her to create classics like “Lucky Star” and “Borderline”.

Today, Madonna has tried to explain away the fiasco and defend her speech.
“I did not intend to do a tribute to her! That would be impossible in two minutes with all the noise and tinsel of an award show. I could never do her justice in this context or environment.”
Im with the Winner!! The beautiful @camila_cabello ! So proud of her! 🌈💕🎉. And just to clarify: I was asked to present video of the year by MTV! And then they asked me to share any anecdotes I had in my career connected to Aretha Franklin! I shared a part of my journey and thanked Aretha for inspiring me along the way. I did not intend to do a tribute to her! That would be impossible in 2 minutes with all the noise and tinsel of an award show. I could never do her justice in this context or environment. Unfortunately most people have short attention spans, and are so quick to judge. I love Aretha! R.E.S.P.E.C.T. 🙏🏼. I Love Camilla! Congrats! I LOVE my dress! AND. I love-L O V E!! ♥️ and there is nothing anyone can say or do that will change that. #vmas #postivevibes
Fine. I get that it was probably not properly thought out on MTVs part and done on the fly. They probably asked if she had any Aretha memories she’d like to share. Madge said sure, and figured she’d wing it. Once onstage, she just started talking and than nervously began rambling. I’ve done it many times. I don’t have a problem with that. It’s just a shame that after all the love and good vibes she’d gotten JUST LAST WEEK, after her birthday and that fabulous Vogue Italia story, it all went up in a puff of smoke. I think the lesson is EVERYBODY NEEDS TO VET EVERYTHING THAT HAPPENS ON THESE SHOWS. Don’t improvise. And for God’s sake, somebody please tell her to get that damn grill out of her mouth. It wasn’t even cute in 2012.
