From Kelly Green Blog: “Artists Martin and Paloma Muñoz have created the ‘Traveler Series’, a selection of handmade and incredibly intricate macabre snow globes, currently on display at the Virginia Museum of Contemporary Art in Virginia Beach, along with large-scale images of similar scenes set up specifically to be photographed. ‘Snow globes are supposed to be cute,’ said Heather Hakimzadeh, MOCA associate curator. ‘These aren’t cute.’ Martin & Muñoz have created nearly 300 globes since they started the project in 2001. The attacks of September 11, 2001 could very well be the project’s impetus. ‘Martin recalled driving into the city soon after the first tower fell. He remembers how much everyone wanted to leave New York after the tragedy. “There was this apprehension about being in the city, like you were a target.’” The show runs through December 30th.
