And another one gone, and another one gone. Another one bites the dust.
CC Slaughters, a longtime fixture in Portland, Oregon’s gay scene – open 39 years! – announced this week that its closing its doors next week… another casualty of the COVID pandemic.
via The Oregonian:
“In September, The Oregonian/OregonLive wrote that CC Slaughters owner Bruce Rice said he was forced to shut the club down because of coronavirus restrictions. Once it reopened, after three months and at reduced capacity, business remained down 80%, he said. Rice said money from the federal Paycheck Protection Programhelped him keep CC Slaughters open. But, as The Oregonian/OregonLive reported on Sept. 22, the money would only last another month.”
“To our friends, our family and our guests from near and far, it saddens us to inform the public that as of Sunday October 11th, 2020, CC Slaughters Portland will be closing. We’d like to take the opportunity to thank you ALL for 39 amazing years of drinks, dancing, drama, and fun! Unfortunately 2020 has been very hard on small businesses everywhere and we are no exception to the hard times we all are experiencing. We hope we can open our doors again to you (our family) sometime in the future, but until then, please be safe, practice social distancing, and take care.”
I’ve been to CC’s a number of times, it was a great place.
Longtime LA bar, Gold Coast, is closing ITs doors after almost forty years. It was announced a week or so ago, I just forgot to post about it. They follow in the footsteps of other LA gay bars – Gym Sports Bar, Flaming Saddles, and Rage – that have closed due to the pandemic.
The announcement was made via Facebook by one of the bar’s owners, Bryan Worl who posted a heated comment on the social media platform.
“This is going to be quick and simple because there are very rude and sick people out there that thing because they say it first they’re some kind of hero and they won’t let the owners handle the situation under their terms and how they want to hand it after fucking 39 years of business…I will call your fucking names out!!!!! Yes. The GC is closing for good… We do not have a choice.. We have fought and tried everything with pressure from very selfish and heartless people. I did NOT want to handle it this way and I’m super pissed. You can’t give the respect to a bar that’s been there for 39 years and let us handle this the correct way?? I have to write a FB post in 2 seconds to stop people from their 5 seconds of fame and being the first to post something about this. It’s not fair to the employees of the GC wh are just learning of this. Are you kidding me???? This is beyond hard enough to lose a business and then not even have time to get something together and announce this in a civil way. I can’t…just can’t!!!”
It’s sad the way gay culture is changing due to the coronavirus… and changing times, I suppose. Grindr can never replace the joy of dancing your ass off at a club, flirting with a bartender, seeing a drag show, laughing with friends… I feel sorry for kids who will never experience those things…
