Should convicts watch movies about gay cowboys? Not in Massacusetts, if prison officials have anything to say about it. And they do. At the state’s largest prison, MCI-Norfolk, a recreation officer who screened Brokeback Mountain for inmates is to be punished for not evaluating the movie for such prison no-nos as excessive violence, nudity, sexual content, and assaults on prison staff (all of which goes on regularly in prison anyway). Apparently, it was the graphic sex between the cowpokes that caused the ruckus. And, surprisingly, not because it was homo sexuality. According to a prison spokesperson, if the sex had been between a man and woman and everything else about the scene had been the same, ”it still would have been banned,” she said. No one’s saying what punishment the prison’s answer to The Love Boat‘s Julie McCoy will receive, but we’re suggesting they show the movie again then throw the recreation director into the shower with the inmates and let the punishment fit the crime.
