IndiWire debuted two tracks from the upcoming HBO documentary Mapplethorpe: Look At The Pictures from composer (and wowlebrity!) David Benjamin Steinberg. Steinberg has previously worked with WOW on Inside Deep Throat, and his extensive film and television credits include HBO’s Wishful Drinking, E! Entertainment’s I Am Britney Jean, Sundance Channel’s The Fabulous Beekman Boys, the Emmy-winning The Last Beekeeper, the Emmy-nominated Million Dollar Listing, and much more.
From IndieWire:
The Sundance Film Festival may have wrapped, but it speaks to the depth of quality programming that there are still little gems to be discovered, and one to keep an eye out for is the documentary, “Mapplethorpe: Look At The Pictures.” From directors Randy Barbato and Fenton Bailey (“Party Monster,” “Inside Deep Throat”), it’s a fresh look at the boundary-pushing and sometimes-controversial work of famed photographer Robert Mapplethorpe, one they hope shines a new light on the artist.
“The controversy surrounding his work cast such a long shadow over it. Only now, more than two decades after he died, can you really look at him through a clear lens,” Bailey told The New York Times.
“Like the title of the film says, it’s time to actually look at the pictures and decide for yourself whether this is an artist worthy of long-term attention,” Barbato added. “We both think he is really important. But you may not understand that until you sit back and look at his pictures and also at his life.”
Mapplethorpe: Look at the Pictures premieres on April 4th.
