Lil Nas X went back to ancient Egypt performing MONTERO (Call Me By Your Name) at the 2021 BET Awards.
At one point he broke out the choreography from Michael Jackson’s 1992 Remember The Time video.
MONTERO is Nas X’s second number one hit on the Billboard 100 after his breakout Old Town Road. Released in March its the title track from his upcoming album, which he’s called a
“coming of age story… it’s 100 percent me.”
The BET performance was also a nod to Pride featuring an all-male troupe of dancers. Once again (see SNL) he kissed one onstage.
He got massive applause from the crowd at the end of the performance but one social media user criticized the musician for his production,
“DON’T USE AFRICAN CULTURE FOR S–TS LIKE THIS!!!! RESPECT OUR ANCESTORS”
Nas X immediately fired back,
“Y’all really like to pretend homosexuality didn’t exist in African culture.”
Nas X’s Red Carpet look is by Andrea Grossi, featuring an outsize structured skirt, corset and jacket. The blue and white toile-inspired dress iss covered in illustrations alluding to war and religion.
But he wasn’t done yet. He quickly returned in an embroidered suit by Richard Quinn.
Jackson’s ’92 Remember the Time was directed by John Singleton, as a short film featuring Eddie Murphy, Iman, and Magic Johnson. The bottom clip is from the 1993 Soul Train Music Awards.
