17-year-old Bay Area teenager TJ Khayatan recently went to the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art with friends where they placed random objects – a cap, a trash bin, and glasses – in the gallery. Within minutes, other museum-goers quickly gathered around the objects thinking they were art! Which reminded me of an episode of Designing Women…
In the eighteenth episode of the fifth season titled “This Is Art?”, which aired February 25, 1991, Julia Sugarbaker left her purse on a podium, and the gallery attendees think the piece is art and even offer to buy it for $5,000! Suzanne also accidentally glues her lips shut with nail glue during this episode and everyone thinks she’s a mime! It really is one of my favorite episodes of the entire series.
TJ said that he and his friends liked a lot of the artwork at the SFMOMA, but they did think some of the pieces may have been a stretch to be considered art. Like a stuffed animal on a gray blanket. He said:
Upon first arrival we were quite impressed with the artwork and paintings presented in the huge facility. However, some of the ‘art’ wasn’t very surprising to some of us. We stumbled upon a stuffed animal on a gray blanket and questioned if this was really impressive to some of the nearby people.
That’s when he and his friends decided to test what people would consider as art.
I can agree that modern art can be a joke sometimes, but art is a way to express our own creativity. Some may interpret it as a joke, some might find great spiritual meaning in it. At the end of the day, I see it as a pleasure for open-minded people and imaginative minds.
The teens posted the images to Twitter and they quickly went viral.
