LGBTQ+ activist (and Zooey’s partner) Erin Reed tweeted,
Her presence will secure representation for trans people in the place where laws are made in one of the states where the battle for rights and dignity will be hardest.”
Zephyr won the election for Montana’s 100th state house district in November last year, when she became the first trans person elected to the state legislature in history.
According to Wikipedia, in 2022,
- Pluto Brand, was elected to State Chair of the Indiana Green Party as the first Trans/Intersex person to be the leader of a State Political Party in Indiana
- Rebecca Blankenship, a member of the Berea Community School Board is the first openly transgender elected official in Kentucky
Danica Roem became the first openly transgender lawmaker in the US after she was elected in 2017.
The LGBTQ+ Victory Fund – a US political action committee – works to increase the number of openly LGBTQ public officials in the U.S.
Representative Zooey Zephyr is now the first trans woman in the history of Montana elected as a legislator.
