A Doritos about about a father and his gay son is a beautiful LGBTQ story based on a real family.
It was released by Doritos Mexico and has now found a following around the globe.
Based on a true story it opens with the son phoning his Dad to let him know he is bringing his “friend” Manuel home from his university for Christmas as he has nowhere else to go.
The video is narrated by the father, who reads out an online post he is writing asking for advice on letting his queer son know that he is loved and accepted. He correctly suspects Manuel is more than his son’s “friend”.
“I am a 52-year-old divorced father and I need help. My son and his friend are a couple and they do not dare to tell me.”
Loving scenes between the two young men are shown and father says they are trying to be “subtle”, but that the relationship is really obvious. They dance and the son orders for Manuel at diner without thinking.
The father is shown scrolling through the responses on Reddit, and he thanks them for their advice.
(We posted this same Reddit story, or one VERY similar last year.)
Doritos Mexico wrote on Twitter:
“The best gift you can give this Christmas is to accept someone as they are. #PrideAllYear.”
Twitter was getting all the feels watching the video. One user wrote:
“Am I crying with a Doritos commercial? I’M CRYING WITH A DORITOS COMMERCIAL.”
“I just saw the commercial for Doritos Mexico.
I came out of the closet to my parents five years ago, and although they always had a good attitude, this Christmas my father told me something that he had never told me, and it filled my heart because I never thought I would hear him say it.
And yes I’m already crying.”
Doritos Mexico sweetly responded:
“Big fan of your parents, and knowing that so much love surrounds you.”
Doritos Rainbow is a campaign that was started by the brand in 2016 to support the LGBTQ community raising money for queer causes, and conducting workshops.
