The Obama Administration will announce that the nation’s first monument to gay liberation, Stonewall National Park. It’s located in Greenwich Village, where it’s always been, the birthplace of the modern LGBT movement.
The designation will encompass the Stonewall Inn, Christopher Park, across the street from the bar, and parts of the surrounding neighborhood.
According to The Washington Post, the National Park Service will designate the area as historic in time for the city’s pride celebration, which commemorates June 28, 1969. On that the day corrupt cops raided Stonewall Inn only to be surprised by an intense rebellion by bar patrons and locals fed up with police harassment.
In the meantime, there’s another monument there! Lady Bunny! They’ve extended her show, Transjester at The Stonewall through the end of May (and beyond?!) I went on opening night and she made a point of paying homage to the joint and those who came before, so make a pilgrimage to one of the early gay settlers (Bunny) – if you want to laugh your ass off, that is.
