I’m embarrassed to say it it but I’m from The Lone Star State. Yes, the state that brought you the assassination of JFK, George W. Bush and Rick Perry, among other sad moments, is now discussing putting anti-trans bathroom measures at this year’s state convention.
Top GOP officials, including Texas Lt. Governor Dan Patrick, are in support of anti-LGBT legislation to limit trans inclusion in public restrooms. Texas is likely to pass their own anti-trans bill when the convention begins this tomorrow in Dallas. According to Fort Worth’s Star-Telegram,
“Already, transgender Texans and their bathroom use has been in the spotlight in a handful of Texas cities—Houston, Dallas and Rockwall.
Now the question of who can go into which public restroom, which at least one state official has said could come up in the Texas Legislature next year might be among the hot-button issues the Texas GOP tackles this week.”
GOP officials attempted to move the convention from Dallas earlier this year. The city has actively attempted to strengthen its protections for trans individuals and under the city’s nondiscrimination ordinance, trans attendees to the convention will be allowed to use the restrooms that align with their gender identities.
Besides focussing on transgender rights, right-wing activists will likely oppose to same-sex marriage and same-sex adoption rights. This is the first time the (Nazi) party is meeting since the U.S. Supreme Court passed Marriage Equality last summer.
Senator Ted Cruz, who just dropped of the race for POTUS, will address the party at the convention. Another proud Texas moment.
