Ariana Grande just wrapped her performance as the youngest person to ever headline Coachella which has been surrounded by controversy and calls for performers to boycott.
Coachella owner, Philip Anschutz, has donated to conservative pro-gun and anti-LGBTQ Christian organizations. Many artists, including the pansexual Janelle Monáe decided to stay away this year.
Grande ended her historic performance with a HUGE rainbow Pride flag across the stage’s screens, and fireworks went off as she left the stage.
Twitter users described it as a big ‘FU’ to Anschutz. One wrote,
“Omg Ariana really said fuck you to the CEO of Coachella and displayed an LGBTQ flag… legend”
The response to Grande’s set was positive despite technical issues and Grande reunited, N*Sync – minus JT – and invited rappers Mase, Diddy onstage. But sound issues plagued her set with long-time collaborator, Nicki Minaj who couldn’t hear herself during the show and the rapper was spotted crying backstage afterwards.
Grande became very emotional herself during her hit, thank u, next, paying tribute to her ex Mac Miller who died last year.
She’ll be back on April 21 to close out Coachella next weekend.
