A group of brave LGBTQ dancers stunned Mumbai after they broke into a flashmob as part of Queer Azadi Mumbai Pride Month. This was the first time the LGBTQ community has danced since India’s Supreme Court decriminalized gay sex last September ruling that it was unconstitutional.
LGBTQ activist Harrish Iyer said,
“Bombay [Mumbai] is at its best when it celebrates equality and plurality.“
This year’s pride was the largest ever with over 15,000 people.
The internet was proud too. Posts said,
“Young, Energetic and Visible. What tremendous courage in the face of prejudice, guys
“So proud of Mumbaikars!“
Co-organizer Ankit Bhuptani told Gay Star News.
“Pride was very nice, it was fabulous. Doctors associations, teachers, colleges and education associations, Indian and multinational companies were there marching for Pride.“
At the end the dancers chant,
“I am gay, that’s ok!
I am a lesbian, that’s ok!
I am a Hijra, that’s OK!“
Watch.
This LGBTQ flashmob has taken Mumbai by storm. I love the way gay love is being normalised in our streets, but more than that I love how the city of Mumbai has become a friend & an ally. Good work @yaariyan_lgbtq @HumsafarTrust @ankydasgupta & team 👏💗🏳️🌈. https://t.co/7VIDLSw6Nh
