New wave nostalgia is alive and well on the new La Roux album Supervision, but the path to their latest smooth synthpop sounds was a rough one.
La Roux was a huge force in last decade’s ’80s synth pop nostalgia (not to mention that vocalist Elly Jackson became a major enby icon), but a lot can happen in a decade. After megahits “In for the Kill” and “Bulletproof,” Jackson and Ben Langmaid parted ways around the time they dropped their aptly-titled 2014 album Trouble in Paradise. Jackson retained the name La Roux for the solo act, left the original label to start Supercolour Records and struggled with voice problems.
