Last night Michael Lucas premiered his gay R-rated version of La Dolce Vita at the SOHO Playhouse in NYC, to promote the release of the even gayer X-rated version being released on DVD. I played a small role in the film (it’s a non-sexual role, thank you very much! I play a paparazzo). I arrived just before the crowd got there, and was happily surprised to see that I had been credited in the cast list (extras often receive no name credit).
I had just enough time to check my coat before the crowd started to arrive. I’m not sure exactly how big the audience was, but they filled the theater, including such downtown scenesters as Amanda Leore, Baby June, and Randy Jones of the Village People (who had a cameo in the movie) to check out Mr Lucas’ latest big-budget gay epic. The way way way too good-looking Falcon porn star, Eric Rhodes, showed up and had everyone tripping over themselves to get a picture with him and to shake his er, um…hand?
And though I’m a bit partial, I will admit to being impressed with Michael Lucas’ version of La Dolce Vita. He seems intent on inserting more artistic complexity into the genre. And for the first time, comedy has a strong presence. Heather Reznor, who plays the dogged reporter Heather Weathers, is laugh-out-loud funny, and Jack Bond brought the house down by just uttering the word “motherfucker” in a scene where his character is caught en flagrante. The addition of Spencer Quest (from the long-running off-Broadway production Naked Boys Singing) is a nice touch. He looks good naked, and he can actually act! What will they think of next?
It was a good show (and the gift bag was the bomb!).
