Million Dollar Listing New York has given viewers worldwide an insider look into the luxury real estate industry of New York. The series has introduced us to top real estate agents, showing us just how high-stakes this ever-changing market is, along with stunning properties, fierce competition, high-profile clientele, and the challenges that come with it.
Season 9 premieres next week, and the agents face the New York City market in an unprecedented way. At the epicenter of the COVID-19 crisis and facing looming uncertainties, the city is completely flipped upside down. The agents must work together to strategize their listings as city dwellers flee to more scenic locations and listing prices dramatically drop.
We recently caught up with one of the new stars of the show, herstory-making Kirsten Jordan to dish all the tea on all the changes that has been happening and how she’s been welcomed into the cast.
How does it feel to be the first female broker in the series? What advice do you have for other women who want to break out in this industry?
KJ: I feel quite triumphant to be the first woman on the series in New York. I know this is a coveted role, and I intend to treat it that way. To break out in this industry, you have to work hard, believe in yourself, and trust your instincts. If you are meant to succeed, you know what it will take to get you there. Keep your gaze forward and put blinders on!
How was the filming process like for you this season, amid unprecedented events in history?
KJ: I loved every minute of it. It was crazy to start as the first female, because everything is different as a woman—think hair, makeup, and outfits! From a logistical perspective, it was challenging to come up with a figure-flattering wardrobe while living in the countryside for 4 months! It was also jarring to experience how everything stopped abruptly when we went into lockdown. On the positive side, I did learn how to do my own makeup and how to use a ring light.
How has the group welcomed you since you joined the cast?
KJ: Of course, the boys welcomed me. I knew Ryan, Tyler, and Steve before the show and they have always been supportive. Fredrik and I got to know each other during the season, and he has proven to be a KJ fan too. Don’t worry though, there will be plenty of intrigue and drama! Filming Celebrity Family Feud and spending time with the LA cast was a blast too. We need to have more of those experiences because we are totally hilarious together.
How has business changed for the real estate market during the COVID-19 pandemic? What adjustments did you have to make business-wise and in your personal life?
KJ: Business feels pretty similar; only there are no longer printed showing materials. I learned how to do an awesome virtual showing. Also, I have truly perfected my IG live skills. The adjustments I have made to my business are massive but a bit independent from COVID-19. I changed firms, and I started my own team this year. Team KJ is a powerhouse! We have eight people, and we are winning big business and selling it all!
How long did it take for you to get used to life during a pandemic? Do you prefer the new adjustments you had to make, such as working remotely and making deals virtually?
KJ: I did not like working virtually or remotely. As soon as I could go to an office, I went and completed my work in real life with people. Deals and relationships are easier that way. I have always spent a lot of time on the phone, so that will never change. I still do a lot of Zoom calls because they are here to stay, but we are certainly meeting people in person and following safety measures.
You’re used to being busy, busy, busy and on the go. How has it been for you, staying home more during the shutdown? Any newfound hobbies, skills, life realizations?
KJ: During the quarantine, I realized that in order to operate at my highest level and as my best self, I must be constantly steeped in motivational literature and weekly sessions with my life coach and acupuncturist. The lockdown did not slow me down at all! In fact, it gave me time to think strategically and to re-tool my business. I realized it was time for me to have my own team and chart my own destiny!
This season has more high-profile clients than ever before. Can you give us some hints of who might appear on the season?
KJ: Ryan Serhant and I sold Marc Jacobs‘ townhouse!
What are some things you enjoy doing to keep positive and relax during stressful times?
KJ: I love to get up really early and meditate. I also love to take walks while calling clients. When no one can talk to me, I listen to my podcasts and books.
In one sentence, how can you describe this season?
KJ: A strong thread of KJ everywhere plus rollercoaster emotions, slices of history, and over-the-top real estate transactions.
