All the excitement about Madonna sampling ABBA made me think back a long long time ago to a galaxy far far away before iPods, before TiVo, when sampling was just a gleam in the eyes of a few visionaries.
There was a band who called themselves The Justifed Ancients of Mu Mu, and they had an idea for their debut 1987 album What the Fuck Is Going On? to sample Abba’s “Dancing Queen.” Almost in its entirety.
Well, ABBA had a bit of a meltdown – as wikipedia explains.
After a legal showdown with ABBA and the Mechanical-Copyright Protection Society, their debut album 1987 – What The Fuck Is Going On? had to be withdrawn from sale. They travelled to Sweden in hope of meeting ABBA and coming to some agreement, taking a journalist and photographer with them, and all the remaining copies of the LP. They failed to meet ABBA, and disposed of the copies by burning most of them in a Swedish farmer’s field and throwing the rest overboard on the North-Sea ferry on the trip home. Some of the copies were secretly kept however….
Somehow I managed to get a bootleg audio cassette and have held onto it for the last 18 years. (Listen to it here)
About Madge’s nearly new single, ABBA stud Benny Andersson told the Telegraph, “She has got guts and has been around for 21 years. That is not bad going…. It is a wonderful track: 100 per cent solid pop music.”
Well, the Justified Ancients had guts, and they’d created a wonderful track that was 100 per cent solid pop music and now that they too have been around for almost 21 years, perhaps ABBA can get the joke?
