Ronnie Spector (former lead singer of The Ronettes) did a secret show at The Cutting Room here in New York City tonight for her 62nd birthday party – she literally called the club a couple of days ago and said she wanted to do it just for the hell of it, invite her friends, etc. I knew about it since I produce Joan Rivers there.
Oh. My. God. I just came home, and I am blown away. To see a rock and roll legend (inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame this year, so it is official), still in 100% top voice, in a room with 75 people, performing just cuz she got the last-minute urge.
Please consider giving NYC hometown girl Ronnie a birthday shout-out Monday. She toured with the Stones, she was Phil Spector’s first wife (and lived to tell the tale), she had motherfucking CHER as a backup singer, she got into the R&R Hall of Fame this year, and she had Patti Smith and the Raveonettes guest on her last CD. Icon. And she is still rock and roll enough to call a dumpy rock club with no notice and do a (genuinely) unannounced show.
