Four great performers all star as feminist icon Gloria Steinem at different ages in The Glorias: Alicia Vikander, Julianne Moore, Ryan Kiera Armstrong, and Lulu Wilson.
The all-star cast also includes Monica Sanchez as Dolores Huerta, Kimberly Guerrero as Wilma Mankiller, Lorraine Toussaint as Flo Kennedy, Janelle Monáe as Dorothy Pitman Hughes, and Bette Midler as Bella Abzug. It’s directed by Julie Taymor based on Gloria Steinem’s book.
Steinem co-founded Ms. Magazine and the Women’s Media Center, among many accomplishments. Many see The Glorias as a response to Mrs. America, the Phyllis Schlafly biopic starring Cate Blanchett, which also depicted Steinem as played by Rose Byrne. That project was about the struggle to pass the Equal Rights Amendment for women (the ERA), describing the clash between feminists and those who opposed it. In an op-ed, Steinem argued that Mrs. America was “bad for American women”:
Phyllis Schlafly and her followers were credited with stopping the ERA, rather than the insurance industry and other economic interests that stood to lose billions if the ERA passed.
