A group of children from a day camp were thrown out of the Valley Swim Club in Philadelphia because they were black. The Creative Steps Day Camp paid more than $1,900 to the Valley Swim Club, a private club that advertises open membership. But when the black children arrived and began entering the pool, all the white children immediately got out of the pool and left the area. Then pool attendants ordered the black kids out and said the club did not allow minorities. “There was concern that a lot of kids would change the complexion … and the atmosphere of the club,” John Duesler, president of The Valley Swim Club said in a statement. Not surprisingly, many African Americans and advocacy groups are outraged over this blaring example of blatant segregation and unequal treatment.
Yet, polls across the nation consistently show that the majority of African Americans refuse to support (and actively vote against) equal treatment under the law for gay Americans. Sadly, there seems to be very little outrage about that.
