Jessie J is back with a new single from her fifth album, and her video for “I Want Love” is based on a real-life night she spent dancing alone in a dive bar.
The story behind the video is a personal one, as she explained on her Instagram:
I had an argument with a bf once after a major red carpet. I went to a bar where I didn’t know anyone and I danced alone until sunrise. I took a shot with strangers and I talked to myself in the mirror in the bathroom. My tough exterior that I so often use as a defense mechanism went away, my heart softened. My fear left the room and I just let go. That’s what this song this video means and represents to me. A simple moment in time. Where I just let go in the REAL world. It’s where I like to be. I like to face life head and heart on. I don’t live in a fantasy. I wanted this video to feel like I felt like that night. I’m so grateful (and honestly intensely emotional) that you can all finally see it and Channel this same energy in your own lives in your own way.
It’s hard to believe it’s been 10(!) years since “Price Tag” and “Domino” from Who You Are.
Since then, she has faced some personal hardships, including a diagnosis of Meniere’s disease, an inner ear issue which causes dizziness and balance problems. That hasn’t stopped her from working as a coach on The Voice and other creative work. Of her new album, she said:
This album is like a short film over many years of my life and this video is the first part of that story I’m sharing. I wanted the video to feel like people weren’t supposed to see this moment. A moment between the moments captured.
