Jessica Chastain and Andrew Garfield are set to star in the Fox Searchlight biopic The Eyes of Tammy Faye with The Big Sick‘s, Michael Showalter directing.
Based on the documentary of the same name, directed by World of Wonder‘s Fenton Bailey and Randy Barbato, the film follows the extraordinary lives of televangelists Jim and Tammy Faye Bakker, played by Garfield and Chastain. In the 70s and 80s, the Bakkers rose from humble beginnings to create the world’s largest religious broadcasting network and theme park. Showalter, got his start in the 90s sketch troupe, The Kids in the Hall, and is probably best known for directing The Big Sick and developing Netflix’s Wet Hot American Summer series. He just directed the Paramount romantic comedy The Lovebirds, starring Issa Rae and Kumail Nanjiani.
The script is by Abe Sylvia and Chastain will produce along with her partner Kelly Carmichael through Freckle Films with Gigi Pritzker and Rachel Shane through their Madison Wells Media. Jordana Mollick is exec producing.
Tammy Faye died in 2007 after a heroic battle with cancer which was documented in WOW’s docuseries, Death Defying. Here’s the trailer from Bailey & Barbato‘s doc, which was nominated for the Grand Jury Prize at Sundance in 2000, The Eyes of Tammy Faye.
